Chianti Cycling Tours and Rides in Tuscany
Guided Wine-Region Tours with an Experienced Biking Club

The Chianti region of Tuscany is famous for its wine, scenery and cycling opportunities. It is the perfect setting for biking tours and cycling sightseeing, allowing you to experience gentle hills, challenging climbs, wide fields of vineyards and olive groves, and picturesque villages.

Our biking club recommends Chianti cycling tours and rides to anyone who wants to enjoy the characteristic sites and tastes of Tuscany.

Castello di Brolio

This is an amazing route that Leonardo discovered by chance. It was christened “Eddie’s Ride” because we first rode it with a guy called Eddie, who had never cycled before and fell in love with the sport on the ride. Starting at either Monte San Savino or Colonna del Grillo (if you want to shorten the ride by 40 km), it’s among the steepest itineraries in the region with empty roads, a couple of challenging climbs and incredible views of vineyards, villages and olive groves. We’ll bike to Castelnuovo Berardenga, the gateway to Chianti, before heading to Castello di Brolio, an imposing castle in the middle of Chianti. Here, we’ll stop for coffee before a breathtaking ride through olive groves, vineyards and an extraordinary oak tree. We’ll then loop back on the road to Gaiole in Chianti before climbing towards Castagnoli, descending to the enchanting hamlet of San Gusme, and returning to Colonna del Grillo and Monte San Savino. The views on this ride are simply incredible, making it one of our favourite Chianti cycling tours.

Total distance: 68 km (if we drive to Colonna del Grillo) or 108 km (without car)

Total ascent: 1160 m

Castello di Ama

We love this ride to Castello di Ama, one of the most stunning vineyards in Chianti. It’s home to delicious wine, a great restaurant and stunning modern art collected over 20 years by artists in residence at the estate, including Anish Kapoor and Louise Bourgeois.  We’ll take the route to Castello di Brolio before heading up a steep climb to Lecchi in Chianti, a hidden hamlet with amazing views of Chianti. From there, it’s a short ride to Castello di Ama, famous for its Sangiovese, Merlot and Malvasia Nera wines – the perfect place for a vineyard tour. There’s also an amazing restaurant and a chance to see the estate’s collection of modern art. After lunch, we’ll head north to Radda in Chianti, a stunning town in the heart of the wine country, before a long descent to Castello di Meleto, famous for its magnificent castle. We’ll then return through San Gusme to Colonna del Grillo and Monte San Savino.

Total distance: 75 km (if we drive to Colonna del Grillo) or 115 km (without car)

Total ascent: 1300 m
